AN AUTHOR from Barnt Green is in the running for a top literary award for his book on the Dover Patrol, who battled to keep control of the English Channel during World War One.

Steve Dunn, of Fiery Hill Drive, has been nominated for the 2017 Mountbatten Maritime Award for deepening public understanding of Britain's dependence on the sea, in his latest book 'Securing the Narrow Sea'.

Steve, who specialises in First World War naval history, said: "It’s a real honour to be nominated for the Best Literary Contribution as this is a tough category, with some outstanding writers.

"I’m obviously passionate about my subject but it’s great to get official recognition and acknowledgement that my book is making an impact and helping to turn the spotlight on maritime issues."

'Securing the Narrow Sea' shares tales of volunteers, yachtsmen, fishermen, merchant sailors and ordinary citizens, 2,000 of whom lost their lives during the four-year battle.

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Institute of Directors in London on November 8.
