THERE is an open day at Wigley’s Field Organic Allotments on Sunday, between 11am to 4pm
The allotments are situated next to the Cliffe Hotel which is a 10-minute pleasant stroll from the Castle, from which directions will be posted on the day.
There will be fresh organic produce, preserves and homemade cakes for sale plus refreshments together with gardening advice if needed.
Also, visitors can have a chance to judge the best vegetable modelled animal.
Wigley’s Fields allotments in Dinham have been described an organic paradise! Enchantingly situated in the shadow of Ludlow Castle and Whitcliffe, and bounded by the River Teme,
Growers have in the past been involved in supporting the Ludlow Cancer Support Group. Historically allotments have been designed to help families to grow plants and vegetables on a non-commercial basis.
There were an estimated 1.5 million allotment plots in the United Kingdom at the end of the First World War. This number declined in the 1920’s and 30’s but increased again in the second world war back to an estimated 1.4 million. After this there was a decline, but demand has increased again with the growth of interest in green issues.
