AN event is being held where the growing concerns around River Windrush's water pollution and flooding will be discussed.

West Oxfordshire District Council is hosting the event at which water industry experts will be present.

The ‘Water Day’ will be held on Thursday, October 4, and both the Environment Agency and Thames Water have agreed to give presentations and answer questions.

The Environment Agency has been exploring ways of cleaning up the River Windrush and they will be presenting a report at the meeting. River Windrush pollution was recently highlighted by the BBC’s Countryfile programme and a ‘Windrush against Sewage Pollution’ (WASP) pressure group has also been set up.

Key issues being discussed include the Environment Agency’s response to the pollution of the River Windrush, and other concerns about water quality in the river network, Thames Water network issues such as sewerage, sustainability going forward, planning for new development, and flooding issues relating to development to accommodate population growth.

The event is taking place at the Woodgreen Council offices in Witney on Thursday, October 4, from 10am.

Also invited are town and parish councils, Oxfordshire County Council's flood team, WASP and Robert Courts, Witney MP.

The proposal for the water day was made by Councillor David Harvey and supported by the authority’s environment overview and scrutiny committee.

Anyone wishing to come along is asked to email enquiries@westoxon.gov.uk .

Councillor Steve Good, cabinet member for environment, said: "Given the importance of issues concerning pollution of the River Windrush and the resulting impact further downstream on the Thames, I am very pleased that the event is taking place and hope it will be a productive event and well attended.”
