A CHARITY dedicated to helping people at times of emergency is in need of new off-road drivers ahead of the busy winter period.

Gloucestershire and Worcestershire 4x4 Response is a charity that helps in emergencies, such as snow and ice, supporting the authorities.

The charity has agreements with NHS Trusts, ambulance services, county and town councils, care homes and other voluntary organisations.

During the Beast from the East snow storm earlier this year its drivers were praised for their work helping hospital staff get to work, and rescuing drivers stuck in the snow.

The non-profit making organisation is made up of BORDA-trained volunteers who offer their time, and some the use of their own 4×4 vehicles, to provide assistance across the region.

Simon Cantillion, from the charity, said: "GW4x4R was established in 2006 by a small group. In the past, we have boasted more than 60 response drivers but this number has declined recently and, at present, the team consists of 30 response drivers and eight controllers across the region.

"GW4x4R is looking to increase the number as we approach the autumn and winter months, our busiest of the year. Team members come from all walks of life and are united by a desire to help communities – particularly the most vulnerable residents – during adverse weather."

Members don't need to own a 4x4. Potential volunteers can become response drivers or controllers who assign response drivers specific tasks, and monitor their progress throughout the call out.

Volunteers are DBS checked and receive training. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can email membership@GW4x4R.co.uk, or visit GW4x4R.co.uk.
