A TEENAGER has been fined after he struck a police officer in the calf and then tried to headbutt him.

William Mckay, aged 19, started being abusive while firearms officers were leaving an incident in Worcester last month, the court heard.

Kerry Lovegrove, prosecuting, said Mckay, of Brickfields Road, Worcester, verbally abused Sergeant Beaumont when he tried to silence the teenager, telling him 'be quiet young man'.

Ms Lovegrove said: "He strikes the officer to the back of his calf. He's then given a further opportunity by the officer, who said 'that's assault I can arrest you, get on your way'.

"He lunges forwards to headbutt the officer, who blocks this. At that point he is taken to the police station."

The solicitor said Mckay showed no remorse during a police interview and told the officers he felt Sergeant Beaumont was goading him.

Gary Harper, defending, said Mckay's 'bolshy' behaviour in the police interview might have been partly due to his ADHD.

Mr Harper said the sergeant had not suffered any injuries in the assault.

He said: "Mr Mckay lunged forward but the police officer was able to block him with an open palm to his chest.

"This is not like a headbutt that made contact."

Mckay, who works in the Worcester Bosch factory, had been drinking in celebration of a friend's birthday before the incident took place, the court heard. Mr Harper added that the defendant, who he described as 'not a terribly big chap', usually has a pint to drink.

However, Mckay consumed half a bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey on the day of the offence, the court heard.

The defendant, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to assault and failing to surrender to bail.

Roger Warrington, chair of the magistrates bench, described the assault as 'an utterly stupid action'.

Mckay attacked Sergeant Beaumont on August 5 and failed to surrender to police bail on September 6.

Worcester Magistrates Court ordered the teenager to pay £395 in fines and costs yesterday [September 20].
