A MEMORIAL to Tom Jones will be created at Sabrina Bridge as part of refurbishment works next year, the county council has announced.

Having spoken to the 18-year-old’s family, the county and city councils have also agreed to remove all the tributes left there on Wednesday (October 17).

The University of Worcester student went missing last month after a night out during Fresher’s Week, before his body was found in the River Severn on September 28.

An extensive search was undertaken by both police and the public – the latter led by friend Harley Hetherington via Facebook group Find Jonah, now renamed Remember Jonah.

Following a vigil on Sunday, September 30, tributes, including bunches of flowers were laid on the bridge and along the river.

Jon Fraser, from Worcestershire County Council Highways, said: “It has been such an incredibly hard time for the family but the number of tributes on the bridge just go to show how well-loved Tom was.

“We've met with Tom's parents and the tributes are being removed on Wednesday with their agreement.

“They have already been onto the bridge and taken away specific mementos to remember their son. The flowers will be turned into compost and put into the riverside flower beds and city centre parks.”

The Worcester News has asked the county council for more details on the memorial and refurbishment.

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said there is currently no updates regarding the opening of an inquest into Tom's death.
