A GOVERNMENT farming official will turn his hand to being a quiz master later this month in aid of farmers in need.

Steve Meredith, Welsh Government Farm Liaison Officer, will lead the quiz at the Black Mountain Lodge in Glasbury-on-Wye on October 26.

Proceeds from the quiz will be donated to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI), which is organised by the charity’s Brecon & Radnor volunteers.

The charity offers financial support to farming people in hardship, and relies on the efforts of its volunteer fundraisers living in rural communities.

So far this year the charity has given out £18,000 to farming families in Brecon & Radnor who have been hit by illness, animal disease and extreme weather.

RABI regional manager for Wales, Linda Jones, said: “It has been a challenging year for farmers and many in the sector are struggling at the moment. We are here to offer support to families in need.

"Our five welfare office staff are there at the end of the phone ready to help and I would urge people who may need our assistance to call the confidential helpline 0808 281 9490.”

RABI’s Brecon & Radnor committee vice-chair Paul Greenow added: “Our quiz nights are always fun and the questions are mostly general knowledge, so everyone can join in.

"Please come along and support those in need in the farming community - you will be very welcome.”

Tickets cost £10 per person and a hot beef Welsh roll is included, along with the chance to win prizes.

Tickets must be pre-ordered from Paul Greenow on 07807 819706, Elaine Stephens on 01874 711356, or Kath Shaw on 07887 553956.
