A CITY singer-songwriter has returned from a prestigious gig in New York which was organised after a famous bassist spotted an online performance of the rising star.

Poppy Waterman-Smith, better known as Poppy WS, performed at New York’s oldest rock club, The Bitter End in Greenwich Village. The music venue has hosted many of the greats, such as Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond and Stevie Wonder.

Speaking about her New York experience, Poppy, aged 25, said: “I felt confident when I was performing. Usually before my gigs I practice my set, however I did not have that option, so I was a little nervous throughout the day.

“I took the opportunity to build up a network. A few people from my Facebook group who live in New York attended my gig. It was an intimate experience performing, it was not too loud, and the atmosphere was great.

“Worcester is a tight knit community. All the musicians are loyal, and we all attend each other’s gigs. It was quite daunting travelling to a new country not knowing anyone.”

The multi-instrumentalist secured the gig after bassist Larry Russell, who works with Billy Joel, spotted an online performance.

During Poppy’s trip, she visited coffee shops and walked around the city to speak to strangers to spread awareness about her prestigious gig.

Poppy said: “There’s so much on offer in a big city and so much to explore. In New York you have the potential to meet everyone and make new experiences. It’s important to embrace these gigs and meet as many people as you can.

She added: “Larry Russell is weird, just like me. We connected, it was very natural. He has an eccentric character and is very supportive. It is amazing how he wants to help young up and coming musicians and get them to where they want to be.”

Poppy hopes to return to New York to record and play future gigs.

She is now focusing on her song writing and concentrating on putting together her new album, which she hopes will be released this summer.

The guitar brand, Tanglewood, supported Poppy in New York and got in touch with their office KORG USA, who managed to source an acoustic guitar for her to use.

“The guitar is similar to the one I use back at home. I’ve taken it home with me - it’s such a great guitar,” she added.
