A NEW burger restaurant is set to open at former Greek eaterie in the city centre.

Alex Arvanitis, who is behind Big A’s Burgers, says he is hoping to open the restaurant to burger lovers next week.

Last month the Worcester News reported that the Greek restaurant Yamas, which had been at the unit in Broad Street for a few years, had closed down.

Ian Perks, the owner of the site, told the Worcester News that the team behind Yamas had decided to close the restaurant for financial reasons, but that he was confident a new business would be there soon.

And having split the unit to return it to the former layout before it became a large restaurant, Mr Arvanitis has agreed to take a lease for one of the units at the site, with a Big A’s Burger sign Coming Soon on display in the window informing the public.

Mr Avanitis said they were currently in the process of turning it into a colourful and bright American style Burger restaurant, with work well underway.

The other unit is continuing to be cleared of the former restaurant items inside, including tables and crockery, which Mr Perks said he was hoping to sell. Mr Perks said he had been getting a lot of enquiries for that unit.

“We have had interested, and I have shown people round,” he said.

“I am pleased the burger bar is opening - hopefully next Friday - and hopefully we can fill the other unit soon as well.”

Mr Perks has owned one side for 29 years and the other unit, which dates back to 1808 when it was a pawnbroker, for more than 40 years.
