ONE of the country's most loved and prolific writers will be appearing at an Evesham Festival of Words event next week.

The festival takes place all year round with various events, all designed to celebrate words in all forms including written, spoken and sung.

Simon Brett, the popular author who wrote classic comedy After Henry, the production for radio which transferred into a popular television show.

That show brought Prunella Scales back to screens, playing Sarah France in the show, a 42 year old mother coming to terms with the early demise of her GP husband. Sarah’s aged and irascible mother, Eleanor, brilliantly played by Joan Sanderson, came to stay and her sharp tongue and deadpan wit kept Sarah’s feet firmly on the ground and audiences entertained.

Since Mr Brett's 1980s success he went on to write 100 of books including the Charles Paris series of crime fiction, played by Bill Nighy in the BBC Radio productions, Mrs Pargeter, Fethering and Blotto & Twinks.

He also produced the BBC Radio 4 favourites I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and Just a Minute as well as The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Mr Brett, who was awarded an OBE for services to literature in the 2016 New Years Honours, will be at Ecgwins Club in High Street, Evesham, from 7.30pm next Wednesday, June 5.

His novels will be available to buy so visitors can chat to him, and get their novels signed by the author.
