BROMSGROVE Court Leet will be celebrating 820 years of history in the town with a very special day of festivities.

The day, June 22, begins with a bright and colourful parade of Bromsgrove Court Leet members in full robes and regalia starting at Housman Hall on Kidderminster Road at 10.30am.

The parade will be led by the Shirley Pipe Band and will follow a route down Kidderminster Road, along St John's Street and on to the High Street.

The group halts at the Red Lion Inn to carry out a traditional ale tasting to ensure the quality of the drink available for sale in the establishment is good.

The parade then continues to the top of town, turning outside Argos and continuing until the Housman Statue.

At around 11am, once everyone is gathered the Bailiff, Dr Bill Tucker, will read King John's Charter of 1199 which decreed that a market could be held in the town.

Throughout the day local crafters, producers, schools, charities and organisations will join the regular Saturday market stalls in the town.

Stall holders are encouraged to dress in medieval or Elizabethan costumes and the Sumner Cup is awarded to the best dressed stall.

An additional 26 stalls will be in the town on Saturday, June 22 taking part in the Court Leet Fair Day market.

Bailiff Dr Bill Tucker said "The Court is most grateful to everyone who is supporting our fair day by hosting a market stall. We encourage people to come to Bromsgrove on June 22 to join in the celebrations of the town's colourful and unique history."

At around 12.30pm members of the court will gather in St John's Wine Rooms on St John's Street for an ale & wine tasting ceremony.
