A HEREFORDSHIRE couple are trying again to get permission to change the use of a redundant pub into a home.

Newtown Cross residents Charles and Susie Willmott moved in and converted the Newtown Inn several years ago but failed to get planning permission to do so.

The couple have now submitted new plans to Herefordshire Council for the former rural pub which they have renamed Newtown House.

John Kendrick, the applicant’s agent, said the scheme complied fully with both the letter and spirit of Herefordshire Council, Yarkhill Neighbourhood Plan and national planning policies.

“The applicants have sought to establish rapport with neighbours in connection with this proposal and have spoken with local people,” he said in the design and access statement.

“This application should be positively received and advanced to consent.”

However, some residents have objected to the scheme.

Ian Carr said: “The closure of the Newtown Inn and the attempt to convert the premises into a private residence has not gone down well with the community.

“The Newtown Inn had a clientele from all the neighbouring parishes in addition to Yarkhill.

“It was also used by passing trade off the A4103 and A417.

“The premises was also the part-time post office. The argument to convert the premises to a private residence is largely based on the statement that the premises has been marketed and no sale has taken place.”

Mr Willmott has declined to comment at this stage.

County council planners are expected to determine the proposals by June 23, 2019.
