A 43-year-old man assaulted a police sergeant but will have to wait until the end of next month to learn his fate after his sentence was adjourned.

Jonathan Morgan, who entered the court on crutches, admitted assaulting an emergency worker when he appeared at Worcester Crown Court on Wednesday.

The attack happened when Morgan of Littlebrook, Himbleton, near Worcester struck Sgt Alex Fogwill on March 24 this year.

Jason Aris, for Morgan, said his client had been out of trouble for four years and had 'significant health problems' for which he was receiving ongoing treatment and counselling.

Mr Aris said there was a 'wealth of material' he would seek to put before the sentencing judge to argue that 'potentially this might be a case where the defendant could receive a non-custodial sentence'.

Lal Amarasinghe, prosecuting, said the assault arose following a traffic accident which police attended.

Morgan disputes failing to provide a specimen for analysis at the scene but this has been remitted to the magistrates court.

The case was adjourned until July 22 for pre-sentence report to be prepared by the probation service.

Judge Nicolas Cartwright said there was a chance the case could be heard at the crown court at either Worcester or Hereford.

He granted Morgan bail which includes a condition of residence but he added a further condition stipulating that he must co-operate with the probation service in the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

He added: "The fact I'm adjourning, granting bail and ordering a report isn't to be taken as any sort of indication or promise as to what the sentence will be."
