A SCHEME to build a new link road and bridge near Pershore is to go before council planners next week.

The plan to build a new northern link road and bridge is part of a county council project to tackle congestion in the town.

The application, by Worcestershire County Council, wants to improve links between Pershore town centre and the A44 as well as improve access to future housing developments in the area and offices on surrounding business parks.

The work is expected to take around a year to complete if approved.

The 420-metre single carriageway link road would run between Wyre Road and B4083 and over the Worcester to Oxford railway line.

The new link road would also create a direct connection between Pershore Trading Estate, Keytec 7 Business Park, Keytec East Business Park and the A44.

A planning application to make a number of roads improvements around Pinvin in preparation for the new link road were backed by county council planners in March.

The work would see a number of improvements in a bid to improve the roads and junctions to accommodate the growing congestion in and around Pershore as well as the number of new homes currently being built and are due to be built around the town in the future.

The new road and junction improvements are part of the county council’s ‘Pershore Infrastructure Improvement Project’ which has been developed in response to the increase in congestion and the number of new homes in Pershore and the surrounding area.

Part of the plan includes improvements to the A44 Pinvin crossroads junction which would reduce the amount of time lights stay on green at Terrace Road.

These changes are to be made to make the new link road the main north to south route between Pershore and the A44.

Further changes to the Station Road and Wyre Road junction would prioritise south travelling traffic on Station Road which would also reinforced the new link road as the main route between Pershore and the A44.

Currently the A4104 is the main route between the A44 and Pershore.

The busy road is surrounded by homes and businesses on a number of industrial estates as well as Pershore High School and Pershore Railway station.

A large plot of land to the west of the busy road has been earmarked for housing in the South Worcestershire Development plan - as part of the Pershore Urban Extension - and would make the road even busier when more homes were approved.

Station Road has been hit with long delays and congestion for years and a row broke out between highways bosses at Worcestershire County Council and developer Persimmon over delays to traffic lights and a new junction.

The county council's planning committee meets on Tuesday (July 9) to make a decision.
