WORCESTER Carnival is almost here, with an action packed day organised by its committee.

Sure to be the main attraction will be the parade that makes its way through the city streets.

The parade of walking groups and floats begins from 3pm, with this year’s theme being the World of Books.

The parade will follow the 1.7 mile, anti-clockwise route which has been established in recent years. It starts at Pitchcroft, going along Croft Road, Dolday, Deansway, to College Street, City Walls Road, Pump Street, High Street, The Cross, Foregate Street and Castle Street before returning to Pitchcroft at 5pm.

Police will be doing rolling road closures to allow people to enjoy a safe and happy day.

The Carnival Village at Pitchcroft will be open from 10am until 6pm. The village will include a sports demonstration area, fairground rides, an inflatable village, market stalls with local charities, crafts, food and drink.

Carnival goers will also be able to enjoy a full day of live entertainment on the main stage. Among the performers will be Mitzy, All Sorts Performing Arts, Worcester School of Dance, Studio B, Jestar, Lollipop Theatre and Tobi Colston. This year’s headliners are The 5.15 band, who will be on stage between 4.30pm and 6pm.

Registration for the Carnival Cup, a youth football tournament, is at 9.30am, with matches kicking off from 10.30am.

This year Carnival’s Queen will be crowned at 10am.

Money raised at the event will be going to the organiser’s nominated charities Worcester Snoezelen, which provides multi-sensory leisure therapy for people with disabilities and West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre, which provides free support services to victims.

Organisers say they have been “working hard to put on a great day on Pitchcroft with stalls, music, activities, children’s fair for families and also the football tournament.”

Carnival team member Angela Derbyshire added: “We are keen to make it a great day for all and to raise lots of money for charity.”

In the run up to the day the carnival committee also organised a school’s competition, where pupils designed a cover for their favourite book. Winners, which are to be announced, will receive a book gift card.

Souvenir brochures for the carnival are available from Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club at Perdiswell Park, Droitwich Road, and the Tourist Information Centre at the Guildhall in High Street. For more details visit worcester-carnival.co.uk.
