MORE than 300 people have responded to a consultation on an application to build a new McDonald's drive thru restaurant in Perdiswell, and the county's highways and public health departments have recommended refusing the plans.

And anyone wanting to have their say has just a few hours left as the consultation period ends today (Tuesday).

The application to turn the former Harvester pub in Droitwich Road into a takeaway and restaurant was submitted in June.

McDonald’s says it will create new jobs for the community, but residents and councillors have been voicing concerns, particularly as North Worcester Primary Academy – set to open in September – is a short distance from the proposed site.

Among those to submit responses is Stephen Hawley, from Worcestershire County Council Highways department, which is recommending refusal.

Mr Hawley said: “The conclusion of the Highway Authority with regards to traffic generation is that the applicant's assessment underestimates the likely impact.

“The access design is inadequate and a formal right turning lane is required and, in the opinion of the Highway Authority, there is insufficient space available to provide such an arrangement.”

And Worcestershire Department of Public Health says: “Worcestershire public health has reviewed the proposal and recommends that the application is refused. Local estimates show that in Worcestershire exposure to at least one fast food outlet within one mile of home and within one mile of school were both associated with a higher proportion of children becoming obese.”

Droitwich Road resident Jack Carradine said: “People in the community against the application have noted that public health and Worcestershire Highways are recommending refusal - we hope the committee will follow this recommendation.”
