SIR – I see the council is asking what they should do to make Gullet Quarry safer. They have fences, signs and visits from police and wardens and still this has not stopped people using the quarry.

As the aim of the survey is to prevent accidents perhaps they should try a different approach.

As I understand it the main danger is caused by the shock of entering the very cold water suddenly.

Why not try making the quarry more attractive to visit and replace the sign about not swimming with larger signs advising on safe ways to use the quarry, ie entering the water slowly, never swim alone, take a buoyancy aid into the water with you etc.

It’s just a thought, but the deterrence approach doesn’t seem to be working.
