IT is fitting that Colin Palmer, a veteran from Worcester who served his country in the Second World War has finally received the medals he is entitled to, more than 70 years after the conflict ended.

This is the kind of thing we should be proud of, honouring our veterans and making sure they get the honour and respect they deserve.

It is entirely understandable that Mr Palmer did not claim his medals at the time, given that he was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, given what he went through and what he experienced, anyone would be forgiven for feeling the same way.

Our care of veterans after leaving the army has come on leaps and bounds since the Second World War, but more should still be done to make sure members of the armed forces can access the support they need after leaving the army.

Too many of our veterans find themselves lacking purpose and direction after leaving the military, with many experiencing the after effects of their service.

We owe it to them to make sure that we get that after care right.
