A FIRE which broke out at a derelict building is being treated as arson.

Flames and black smoke were seen billowing from the building in Malvern Technology Park, in St Andrews Road - on the old QinetiQ site.

People in the area were advised not to leave their homes during the fire due to the heavy smoke and ash falling.

Four fire engines were called out to the fire at 4.58pm on Tuesday, August 28.

St Andrews Road had to be closed while firefighters tackled the blaze.

Large plumes of smoke were reported by local people as well as a strong smell.

One resident Michael Elston added: “It looked quite fierce at one point.”

Another Gloria Stinton said: “There’s a very strong smell of smoke here. It’s horrible!”

Gemma Henton said: “I can smell it and I’m near the cricket club.”

A resident, who didn’t want to be named said: “I was walking the dog and could just see a lot of smoke. It looks like it’s coming from the QinetiQ site.”

West Mercia OCC tweeted a warning, saying: “Ash is falling, please keep all doors and windows closed, keeps pets indoors and do not go out unless you absolutely need to.”

The fire was put out by 6.30pm and firefighters carried out investigations using thermal imaging cameras.

Police say they are treating the fire as arson - but say there was no danger to life.
