IT is a very special year for the school at Neen Sollars.

As the new school year starts the school is marking its 100th anniversary.

The school opened in September 1919, just months after the end of the First World War.

Children who attended the school at the time would have lived in a very different world.

Most of them would have been from local families working the land as agricultural workers.

All of them would have spent their early years at a time a great sorrow and worry.

For some they would have found themselves just 20 years later fighting or living as civilians during the Second World War.

The photograph shows the children at the school on that September day all those years ago.
