DRIVERS were met with disruption on the county’s roads due to roadworks on the A438 Ledbury road near Hereford.

Herefordshire Council has issued a closure notice on the highway for an access road to be built near the Lugg flats. The works are expected to last until tomorrow (September 6).

But many drivers were caught out by the diversion yesterday while on their daily commute to work or while taking kids back to school.

Cotts Lane in Lugwardine was filled with cars trying to get around the road closure.

The council says the closure is needed for workers to complete a new access road near the Lugg flats.

A Herefordshire Council spokesman said the landowner applied for and was granted a full road closure.

“Private works are being carried out on the A438 Ledbury road by a neighbouring landowner in order to create a new access road to his land,” he said.

“The resurfacing is being carried out at night.

“It would appear that he’s facilitating traffic through the area during the day. That is his decision to do so.

“For safety reasons, a diversion is in operation and some delays can be anticipated until the scheduled completion date of 6 September.

“We have a duty to manage our highways network, and set various requirements which must be met before private works can begin.

“Our requirements regarding advance signage were complied with and the landowner obtained the necessary traffic regulation order to carry out the works.”
