A STUDENT has been banned from driving after he was caught drink-driving in Hereford.

Lloyd Garin Davies, 18, admitted the offence when he appeared before magistrates.

Nicola Ritchie, prosecuting, told the court that Davies was spotted by police heading in the opposite direction as he drove his Mini along Bath Street in Hereford without his headlights on at 3.20am on September 8.

The police officers flashed their own headlights at him, but made the decision to turn their vehicle around and follow him as he continued driving without turning his lights on.

Davies, of Canon Pyon Road, Hereford, was pulled over and a roadside breath test revealed he was over the limit.

He was arrested, and a further test showed he had 54 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Philip Cornell, for Davies, said the aspiring engineer had not seen the police car flash its lights at him and admitted he had been drinking and knew he should not have been driving.

He had pulled over voluntarily and had managed to parallel park his vehicle successfully.

“No doubt you will never see him here again,” Mr Cornell said.

The bench told Davies it had turned into an expensive night out which would have a heavy impact on him.

He was disqualified from driving for 12 months, fined £80 and must pay £135 in costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
