WASTE not want not will be the worthy mantra for the The Big Soup Share event in Newent, next week.

Tasty soup made from surplus vegetables, which otherwise might have been discarded, will be served up under Newent’s Market House, on Saturday October 12, from 10am to noon, and young people will be doing the serving.

Even better, the ingredients will be home grown and delightfully fresh.

The Big Soup Share is a national initiative from the Royal Horticultural Society school gardening, and it is “designed to avoid food waste and promote healthy home cooking”.

Students from all over the UK will be offering soup for sale made from surplus veg donated by local gardeners.

In Newent, young people from The Chill-Out Zone and Newent in Bloom, will be working together to avoid food waste and create great soups.

A spokesman for Newent in Bloom said: “We’ll cook the soup at the Chill-Out community café and serve it warm on the Saturday morning under the Market House. In Newent, allotment holders will be among the donors, and volunteers. Newent in Bloom will help cook with young people from the Chill-Out Zone, most of whom are students at Newent Community School.”

And looking after the environment will be at the heart of the event.

The spokesman added: “Even the soup cups are recyclable, thanks to a donation from Colin’s Italian Kitchen, so there’ll be zero waste! Soup will be sold for donations, with any profits being split between Newent in Bloom and the participating youth organisations.”

A spokesman for the Big Soup Share said: “This is a chance to celebrate the work people do in their garden by harvesting the crops, whizzing them up into a delicious soup and sharing it out with others.”
