A FIRST school has celebrated its 50th birthday by officially opening its new playground to the children.

The mayor of Droitwich Spa, William Moy, county councillor Richard Morris and school governors joined in with the celebration at Westlands First and Nursery School, in Droitwich.

Rachel Roberts, headteacher at the school, in Farmers Way, said: “This was all about us celebrating our 50th anniversary of the school.

“Our governors and friends of the school have very kindly donated an apple tree which we have planted.

“The friends of Westlands First School have helped us by donating and making cakes for the children to enjoy. We are celebrating this for the children.”

Mrs Roberts added: “We are also opening our new early years outside area. We have tried very hard to raise funds to improve our outdoor provision for our early years’ children. So today is about officially opening that as well.

“We are a community school and we pride ourselves to being the heart of our community. We are the beating heart of the Westlands community.”

Cllr Richard Morris donated money from his Worcestershire County Council divisional funds towards the outdoor area.

In a speech before cutting the celebratory ribbon, he said: “50 years is a fantastic achievement.

“I know what great heart and what great ability it gives to the community. So long may Westland school continue and the community that you create.”

He added: “It is a jewel in the whole area, and I am pleased from a county councillor’s perspective that I could contribute to the playground.”

The children gathered in the school hall to sing happy birthday while staff blew out candles on the birthday cake on Thursday, October 24.

An apple tree was also planted in the school grounds which was gifted by Webbs Garden Centre.

E B Memorials in Worcester donated a plaque which marks the 50th anniversary.
