I WAS so pleased to see a same-sex couple perform on BBC’S Strictly Come Dancing.

There’s nothing I enjoy more than getting snug on a Saturday night watching Strictly with a brew.

The glitzy outfits, the quirky themes and the talented dancers - it’s definitely my favourite TV show of the year.

The popular series made history last week as professional dancers Graziano Di Prima and Johannes Radebe performed an intimate routine together on the results show.

It brought a tear to my eye as the pair danced so gracefully to the song Shine by Emeli Sandé.

Graziano and Johannes portrayed a true bromance during the production. There were no male and female roles – just an elegant piece where the two moved freely.

This idea was inspired after ITV’S Dancing on Ice announced that they will allow a same-sex couple to perform in the 2020 series.

Ex-Steps member, Ian ‘H’ Watkins will have a male dance partner. This will be the first time a UK dancing show will feature a same-sex pairing.

I believe both gay and straight viewers watching from the comfort of their home will benefit from witnessing same-sex couples dance.

This could be massive in terms of evolution in the LGBT+ community. Particularly for the younger folk watching, it will encourage them to express who they are and feel more comfortable in their own skin.

It’s certainly a step in the right direction to celebrate diversity. Traditionally, dancing has always been between a man and a woman. However, what is stopping us from breaking that habit?

At the end of the day, it takes two to tango and it should be up to the dancers to decide who they would like to perform with. Whether it being a joyful jive or a wonderful waltz, I personally would like to see more same-sex pairing in the future.

Currently on the show only mixed gender couples compete, but the producers of Strictly say they’re ‘inclusive’ and ‘completely open’ to having same-sex couples perform in the future.

In a statement the BBC has previously said: “We are completely open to the prospect of including same sex pairings between our celebrities and professional dancers in the future, should the opportunity arise.”
