HUNDREDS of people in Redditch marked Holocaust Memorial Day this weekend - the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

A mix of events saw a procession leave Redditch Town Hall to the Holocaust marker in Church Green.

There was an event at the town hall with performances by Redditch Community Gospel Choir, Redditch Kerala Cultural Association, Redditch Polish Youth School choir, and readings by a number of invited guests.

There was also a special talk and Q&A by Holocaust survivor Mindu Hornick – an inspirational grandmother who survived the horrors of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

Mindu was awarded an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours List.

Councillor Peter Fleming, who chaired the committee that organised the event, said it had been a privilege to do so.

“When people ask what did Redditch do to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, our town can be proud of the event on Sunday," he said.

"From the spectacularly poignant art work from our local schools and the brave words from Mindu Hornick, it all contributed to a pertinent example of Redditch remembering the atrocities of the Holocaust.

"Many communities were able to stand together, which exemplifies what is special about Redditch.”

Nationally, The Duchess of Cambridge has taken photographs of Holocaust survivors which will form part of an exhibition marking 75 years since the end of the Holocaust.

Four survivors, alongside their children and grandchildren, feature in moving new photographs.

Kate was among those behind the lens for the project and described the survivors in her portraits as “two of the most life-affirming people that I have had the privilege to meet”.

On Monday (January 27), Kate was joined by her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, at the UK Holocaust Memorial Day commemorative ceremony in Westminster.

Elsewhere, the Duchess of Cornwall attended commemorations in Poland to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of former Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
