A SECOND World War heroine will be honoured with a commemorative garden at this year's RHS Malvern Spring Festival.

Set to be unveiled during the VE Day Bank Holiday weekend, the garden will celebrate the story of British spy Violette Szabó, posthumously awarded the George Cross after she was captured, brutally tortured and executed by the Nazis aged just 23.

The courageous young mother, who died in Ravensbruck concentration camp 75 years ago this week, was a familiar face in Wormelow, spending many holidays with her family at Cartref on Tump Lane - now home to a museum dedicated to her life.

Her story of courageous heroism so moved Norfolk-based designer Jane Scott Moncrieff she has dedicated her first garden at an RHS show to her memory.

The garden will evoke a feeling of rural dilapidation in wartime France. A replica of the 1940s Citroen that transported Violette during her mission before she was captured will also feature.

“I have been fascinated with the Special Operations Executive for over 20 years after reading Leo Marks' book, Between Silk & Cyanide,” said Jane.

“After learning all about Violette’s story within the organisation, I wanted to raise awareness about the incredibly selfless men and women who put their lives at risk over 75 years ago.”

Former PR consultant Jane recently retrained in garden design, and said she was thrilled to be bringing a show garden to the RHS Malvern Spring Festival.
