A CHIPPY must immediately sort out four issues after it was given a one star food hygiene rating.

Inspectors found there were four areas which staff at Rose Avenue Fryer must give “immediate priority” in order to sort out the takeaway.

The general manager of the chippy previously said they were addressing the issues raised in the report, and the rating will only be temporary after applying for another inspection.

The chip shop, which is currently operating as a mobile van in Rose Avenue, Tolladine, was inspected on January 8.

Listing the areas needing immediate action, inspectors wrote: “The temperature of the fridge and freezers must be monitored as part of your daily checks.

"A freezer running at -4C, needs to be at least -18C. Repair or replace and in the meantime ensure high risk rood is not stored in it. Remove the level 5 food hygiene sticker from the chiller in the mobile unit. Do not store items in the wash hand basin.”

Other requirements inspectors listed, but with less priority, included replacing rusty shelving, replacing a chiller in the unit holding pop, salad and cheese as it was currently temperature controlled, repair the door of another fridge, a lid to be put on a trade waste bin, ensure there was no gaps in shed (used for potato preparation) that could allow pest access, that paperwork needs to be kept with a written record of food safety procedures and a record of checks, and a demand for procedures to be in place for providing allergen information to customers and reducing cross contamination.

Harjinder Sandhu, general manager of the chip shop, blamed the move to the van, from a unit in the road, was the reason the inspection was “not high”.

"We expect to be using the van until December," he said. "We have already acted on the report, and made the requirements the inspectors asked for. I am used to four and five star inspections - so obviously, we expect it (the next exspection) will be higher."
