We are now fully back into the swing of things in Parliament following the General Election.

Since my last update we have left the European Union, made key announcements such as confirming that HS2 will go ahead, and brought forward legislation on a range of commitments made in the election manifesto.

While our future relationship with the EU and our trading relationship with non-EU countries will be a dominant political topic throughout the year, you will notice a renewed focus on the domestic agenda with a particular emphasis on making sure every part of the country benefits from additional investment in public services and infrastructure.

I will be working with other Worcestershire MPs to ensure that we get our fair share of this increased spending in our part of the world.

Prior to the reshuffle, I was a Government Whip and spent a lot of time in the Chamber of the House of Commons helping to pass legislation in areas such as police services, local government funding, broadband roll-out and NHS funding to name a few.

It was my job to help get the legislation passed in a timely manner and to help colleagues with questions and concerns.

We have also brought forward rare emergency legislation to stop the early release of prisoners convicted of terrorism offences. I expect the legislative programme to be similarly busy in the spring and summer.

In the reshuffle I was promoted to a junior ministerial role at the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and will be the new Minister for Sport, Tourism and Heritage – therefore covering sectors that I have worked in before entering Parliament and areas that have been a focus of mine in Parliament.

These are also areas of interest and indeed passion for many of my constituents and I look forward to getting down to work in my new role.

Of particular relevance to the West Midlands, I shall also be the Minister overseeing the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

I look forward to providing an update on my new activities in an upcoming report.
