A talk to be given by Deborah Overton to the Vale of Evesham Historical Society on Thursday 27 February at 7.30pm at the Friends’ Meeting House, Cowl Street, Evesham. There is an entry fee of £3 for non-members which includes refreshments after the talk. Deborah worked for the Worcestershire Archaeology Service for 28 years. She is a landscape archaeologist rather than a digger which means, as she says, “that I look at lumps and bumps on the ground” for the research of settlements and rural agricultural landscapes, together with documents and maps. She is particularly interested in the Iron Age and the Anglo-Saxons as their technology, way of life and art is very similar but she also has an interest in medieval rural landscapes. Deborah’s job at the Archaeology Service involved working in the Historic Environment Record and outreach and education. This meant she went out to schools, undertook walks and talks and organised events, day schools and workshops. Along with her colleague from Worcester City Archaeology she also ran the Worcestershire Young Archaeology Club for 12 years. Deborah is an experienced and fascinating speaker and the Vale of Evesham Historical Society is always eager to welcome her back to share with us her knowledge of the local area.
