ELEVEN jobs are at risk as a city centre shop is set to close.

The discount chain Poundland will close its store in The Shambles, Worcester, on Monday, March 16, but its other store located in Broad Street, Worcester, will remain open.

A spokesman from Poundland said: “"There are 11 colleagues in The Shambles store. We’re in the process of consultations and will work with them to redeploy wherever possible.

"While we’re sad to be closing our store in The Shambles, Worcester, on 16 March 2020, we’ll still be offering customers amazing value nearby in Worcester Broad Street.

“Where we close a store, it goes without saying we always work hard to look after colleagues directly affected.”

The Poundland chain was founded in 1990 by Dave Dodd and Steven Smith.

Worcester News readers expressed concern at the closure amid a flurry of other stores shutting.

Sophie Taylor said: “Will be missed as it’s the old original store, many memories. It was good and loved for its variety of things compared to the other stores mind.

“It was the case of only a matter of time, the facility isn’t in the best shape now. Just hope the staff won’t lose out and can be placed within the other shops etc.”

Jules Evans said: “Thought it was closing. Very little stock left in the food section when I popped in the other day.”
