THIEVES stole the only box of protective masks from a doctors' surgery in Kidderminster.

In a post on social media on Tuesday, The Church Street Surgery in Callows Lane said the box had only been donated to them by a local dental practice the day before.

Staff said they did not report Tuesday's theft to police but urged the thieves to return the masks.

The statement said: "We need them to protect staff and remain open."

Outraged members of the local community commented on the post, describing the theft as "disgraceful" and "the height of selfishness".

Later that day, the surgery posted to say it had received several donations of masks from the public.

The post read: "We are totally humbled by the kindness and generosity we have received today in light of the post we made this morning regarding our stolen masks.

"The messages of support have been overwhelming and we have received extremely generous donations of masks from individuals which now means we have enough to keep our staff safe until our official supplies arrive.

"From each and everyone of us at the practice we thank you for your generosity and your continued support during this extremely difficult and challenging time."
