A COLLEGE has had to adapt the way it works with employers to keep work experience opportunities going during coronavirus.

Heart of Worcestershire College has had to shut its doors, but remains open digitally, working with charity Sight Concern to develop a programme of projects for students to work on at home.

The College’s TV, Film and Media students were due to promote a number of fundraising events for Sight Concern through social media coverage and promotional videos. However, due to recent events all practical work for this project had to be suspended.

Sight Concern representative Andrew Ruff worked with the college to produce the series of ‘mini projects’ for students to work on from home during this time. This included research into the charity’s use of social media and generating ideas on how to promote future fundraising.

He said: "I am an ex-student of the College and have always valued the support I had at that time, which was instrumental in shaping my future and eventual career.

"I have from time to time used the College's services, especially when I worked for Worcester Community Trust, a few years ago on a number of projects. I received a great deal of positive comments when I presented to the students recently at the College.

"Since offering the mini projects I have already been contacted by a student who has come up with good ideas and looks to be very professional in her approach."

Sight Concern supports people with sight loss and visual impairment across Worcestershire, helping them lead independent and fulfilling lives.

Their services include information sessions, support groups and individual support to learn new skills, develop confidence and access services.

The charity also assists with digital technology such as mobile phones and computers.

Talking about the work, HoW College’s work experience and job coach Laura Jones said: “In this time of uncertainty it is important we remain focussed on supporting students with opportunities that will benefit their future careers and confidence within their studies. This would not be possible without the willingness of the students and Andrew from Sight Concern.”
