THE leader of the Labour group on Droitwich Spa Town Council is the latest to call for Dominic Cummings to be sacked.

Councillor Alan Humphries has written to Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston in a open letter in which he described “his disgust” at the Prime Minister and the government’s support for the PM’s chief adviser.

Mr Huddleston has been contacted by this paper, but did not respond on the matter before our deadline.

Earlier this week the Bishop of Worcester was another to wade into the debate about Mr Cummings, the PM’s chief adviser travelling to County Durham with his family, describing the issue as ‘a matter of life and death’.

Mr Cummings said at a press conference at Downing Street on Monday he had no intention of resigning after he travelled 260 miles with his family in March to be near relatives at a family farm in the North East when his wife became ill and he feared he could be struck down with Covid-19.

He also said that he drove to Barnard Castle to test his eye-sight for the drive back to London.

But Cllr Humphries was one of those not happy with the explanation, writing: “My father-in-law was admitted to hospital on April 11 and died alone with Covid-19 on 17 April.

“He had been complaining of feeling unwell for a number of days and, had we been able to visit him during that period, we might have got him treatment sooner which may have prevented his death. We chose not to because government guidelines were clear on not travelling unless the journey was essential.

“It now appears those guidelines were not clear and are open to individual interpretation.”

The councillor also mentioned his sister-in-law and wife’s cousin who had Covid-19, and had to make sacrifices during self isolation.

“To now find that Dominic Cummings was allowed to do all of this because he is the chief adviser to the Prime Minister and was making a decision in “the best interests of his family” and following the discredited guidelines is a slap in the face to everyone," the councillor said.

“Nigel we do not share the same politics and you are aware of the political role I perform in Droitwich, however, we are both human beings doing what we think is the best for our town so, again, I call on you to unequivocally condemn the actions of Dominic Cummings and the government in supporting these actions and call for him to be dismissed from his role.”
