HARRIETT Baldwin MP has offered her support to the Royal British Legion at an event in Westminster.

The Royal British Legion is the country’s largest Armed Forces charity, and provides welfare assistance for many thousands of veterans, serving personnel and their families.

Mrs Baldwin, whose West Worcestershire constituency includes Tenbury and who is a member of the Royal British Legion, was briefed on work being carried out to help working-age members of the ex-service community as well as the long-term work delivering practical assistance through community outreach services and six care homes.

A network of 16 high street ‘pop-in’ centres has also been developed to make it easier for beneficiaries to seek help.

“As a former Defence Minister and as a constituency MP, I have seen at close hand the work that the Royal British Legion does and I know that their activities extend well beyond the annual poppy day fund-raising, helping thousands of veterans and their families,” said Mrs Baldwin.

“This was a useful chance to chat to the local managers about the work they do locally and to thank them for the great job they do throughout the year.”

Gail Walters, who is assistant director for the Royal British Legion in the Midlands, said the support from the MP is welcome.

“The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community – serving men and women, veterans and their families,” added Ms Walters.

“This latest parliamentary event offered a great opportunity to spread the word about the range of services we provide.”

Mrs Baldwin is used to working closely with the services as a former Minister for Defence Procurement at the Ministry of Defence.

In this role she would visit service establsihments and one year attended an Remembrance Day commemoration on the other side of the world due to being away from her constituency on Ministry of Defence Business.

The Royal British Legion has strong representation in Tenbury and also has close connections for the Towm Mayor Sue Perry who for many years headed the annual poppy day collection.

Members of the Legion that meets every month at the Fountain Inn at St Michaels also staged a number of events between 2014 and 2018 to mark the centenary of World War One.

The Legion was also represented at a special event held last summer in France.
