Bournemouth and Saints played out a drab goalless draw at the weekend.

However, there was plenty that could be learned from the result at the Vitality Stadium.

1. They ended their run of three consecutive Premier League defeats

Saints hadn't picked up a point since the 2-2 draw with Brighton, but that ended at the Vitality Stadium.

The performance from Mark Hughes' side was a dramatic improvement from what we saw in the Liverpool, Wolves and Chelsea games.

2. Hughes may have found a back four he can stick with

It's fair to say that Hughes hasn't known what combination of defenders is his best to go with at the back.

However, after Saints kept a clean sheet against a Bournemouth side that have scored nine goals in their last three games, it could be a sign that Hughes has found the right formula at the back.

Cedric, Wesley Hoedt, Jack Stephens and Ryan Bertrand showed that they can work as a unit together in time for the crucial Newcastle game this weekend.

3. Danny Ings isn't quite at his best yet

The striker started the campaign in impressive style, scoring three goals in his first five matches.

But Ings hasn't found the back of the net in the league since the draw with Brighton at St Mary's.

He was kept quiet by the Bournemouth defence and never looked like scoring.

Ings has missed so much football recently that it's only normal for him to be having a dry period in front of goal as he works his way back to full fitness.

4. Manolo Gabbiadini can't buy a goal at the moment

If a striker was ever short on conficende, it would be Gabbiadini.

The Italian is yet to score in any of the eight games he has featured in this season.

He was gifted an opportunity to net the winner at the weekend when Nathan Redmond picked him out in the middle of the box.

But Gabbiadini squandered the chance when his free header from close range drifted over the bar.

5. The Newcastle game on Saturday will be huge

Newcastle's trip to St Mary's this weekend already feels like it will be a season-defining match.

If Saints can get a rare win at home then it will take them seven points clear of the visitors who are rooted to the bottom of the table.

However, if Newcastle manage to get their first victory of the season, then it looks like Saints will be set for another battle to avoid relegation.
