HALESOWEN Town ended their season in style by lifting a second piece of silverware in a week.

The Yeltz, newly crowned Division One South champions, beat Division One North counterparts Curzon Ashton to win the Peter Swales Challenge Shield at The Grove.

The game started in even fashion with both title-holders appearing well matched.

The visitors went closest to opening the scoring after 25 minutes when a 25-yard free kick from Curzon captain Sam Walker beat home goalkeeper Matt Sargeant only to rebound back off the post, allowing Joe Hull to clear.

As the Yeltz gradually gained control on a day of celebration, Iyseden Christie met a 28th minute corner from Tom Tonks but his header was scrambled off the line. Christie then combined well with his strike partner Ben Haseley on several occasions just before the interval with Haseley blocked in front of goal after 34 minutes.

The previous weekend's two goal hero finally put Halesowen ahead in the 65th minute after being let through by fullback Simon Woodford's slip. He took the ball calmly round goalkeeper Burton before slotting his 40th goal of the season into an empty net.

As Curzon crumbled, Christie was left in space to double the lead with his 20th goal of the campaign from a close range header after meeting a trademark long throw-in from Tonks.

Captain Hull then made it 3-0 by netting another free header in the 79th minute from Brendan Kelly's free-kick as Halesowen coasted to a tenth straight victory.

Curzon's consolation came two minutes into injury time when Walker's free-kick from the edge of the area rebounded for defender Connor Hampson to beat goalkeeper Sargeant.

After the final whistle Halesowen were triumphantly presented with the impressive Peter Swales Challenge Shield and also paraded the Division One South championship trophy around the euphoric Grove.

Chairman Colin Brookes said: "It was the perfect way to end the perfect season. The game gave our fans that couldn't travel to Belper the chance to celebrate with the team. It was a fantastic day.

"Winning the shield was great and it also meant we finished our season by winning ten games on the spin."

John Morris, a key part of manager John Hill's backroom team, has now left the club.

Morris, who was at the club on a temporary basis, scouted the opposition and other players during his time and helped Hill settle into the Hales hot-seat when he first arrived.

The Yeltz have appointed club director Mike Burke to the position of vice-chairman.

Burke has been a supporter of the Yeltz for many years and his company, The Big Pet Store, has been the club's main sponsor for the last few years.

Brookes added: "I am very pleased to confirm that Mike Burke has accepted the position of vice-chairman to Halesowen Town Football Club. I was very sorry when previous vice-chair John Russell stood down a few months ago. I would like to place my gratitude and thanks to John Russell for his support to Halesowen Town Football Club. It was decided to wait until the end of the season before appointing a new vice-chairman."

"Mike's love for the club, hard work and local business connections made him an ideal choice and obvious choice for vice-chairman."

The club will host its annual presentation evening this Saturday in the James Grove Lounge from 7pm.

All are welcome to attend with the bar open and food available. A host of award will be presented to the players, including the fans' player of the season award.
